Mothers & Daughters

Being a mother is, well…hard! It’s also glorious and terrifying and joyful and rewarding but also unrewarding. As women step into motherhood, we often times step away from so many other things. Sometimes we describe it as stepping away from “ourselves” as we actively help our children find themselves. Sometimes we go through a refiner’s fire on our way to becoming a new self. Whatever the journey, motherhood is difficult and many women forget who they are deep down at the very core of their being.

Being a daughter is equally challenging. The act of becoming a woman is a long, oftentimes very emotional, road. Our girls must learn to navigate the cultural norms and expectations while also pushing back against those things when they threaten to press in too hard. They must learn to recognize lies from society and from within, find and use their voice, and dig deep for the strength it will take to long haul this journey.

I had the great privilege of working with some mothers and daughters recently and it filled me to the brim!

These women have been friends for 15 years (they all met in the same newlywed class). They entered into motherhood together. They have celebrated together and they have wept together. And now their daughters are growing up with one another and figuring out how out struggle well together. It was such a gift to watch them, this community that they’ve created and nurtured all these years, the trust that they’ve built and the love that they show.

Mothers, we need that for our daughters! You’ve heard that it “takes a village”, it’s so true. And I know that our “village” has been isolated and remote but hang on and dig deep and reach out. Remember who you are at your core…no matter if you’ve stepped away or are on your way…you are strength and love and beauty and fierceness and determined and a freakin’ QUEEN!

Now, adjust your crown (and your daughter’s) and go out there and get.to.work!!

All my love,
