Arizona Brand Photographer: Practicing What I Preach: Why I Finally Stepped in Front of the Camera

As a photographer, I'm usually the one behind the lens.

I'm the one fixing stray hairs, making people laugh, adjusting lighting, and reminding everyone that "Yes, you really do look amazing."

But a few months ago, I found myself in the very place I ask my clients to be every single day—in front of the camera.

And let me tell you... it's a humbling experience.

I recently treated myself to a personal branding session with the incredibly talented Monica McLean Photography, and we chose the beautiful Letty Lume Studio in Gilbert, Arizona as the location. The experience reminded me exactly why I encourage every business owner to invest in professional branding photography—and why we should all practice what we preach.

Even Photographers Need Updated Branding Photos

One of the biggest misconceptions about photographers is that we must have hundreds of beautiful photos of ourselves.

The truth?

Most of us have thousands of photos... of everyone else.

We're experts at making other people feel confident in front of the camera, but when it's our turn, we suddenly become the ones wondering:

  • "What do I do with my hands?"

  • "Is this smile weird?"

  • "Do I always stand like that?"

Turns out photographers aren't magically immune to camera nerves. In fact, we're often some of the toughest clients because we notice every little detail!

Stepping in front of the camera reminded me exactly how vulnerable my clients feel. It renewed my empathy and gave me an even greater appreciation for creating a relaxed, encouraging experience during every session I photograph.

Why Personal Branding Photography Matters

Whether you're a photographer, realtor, therapist, attorney, coach, creative entrepreneur, or small business owner, people want to know the person behind the business.

Your brand isn't just your logo or your colors.

You are your brand.

Professional branding photos help your audience connect with you before they ever meet you. They create trust, show personality, and help potential clients feel like they already know you.

Fresh branding images can be used everywhere:

  • Your website homepage

  • About Me page

  • Social media profiles

  • Instagram and Facebook posts

  • LinkedIn

  • Email newsletters

  • Marketing materials

  • Speaking engagements

  • Business cards

  • Podcasts and publications

Instead of scrambling to find one decent selfie every few months, you'll have an entire gallery of images that consistently represent your business.

And trust me—your future self will thank you.

Working with Monica McLean Photography

From the moment I arrived, Monica made the entire experience feel relaxed and effortless.

She has a wonderful way of making you forget there's even a camera pointed at you (which, as someone who notices every camera angle, is saying something!).

Her direction was natural, encouraging, and never forced. She guided me through poses that actually felt like me instead of making me feel stiff or overly posed. Every little adjustment helped create images that felt authentic and professional.

As photographers, we know how much work happens behind the scenes to make a session appear effortless. Monica balanced creativity with professionalism, allowing me to simply enjoy the experience and trust her process.

Being photographed by another professional was such a valuable reminder that it's okay to let someone else take care of you for a change.

The Beauty of Letty Lume Studio

The perfect branding session deserves the perfect location, and Letty Lume Studio in Gilbert absolutely delivered.

The studio is filled with gorgeous natural light, clean modern décor, and thoughtfully designed spaces that photograph beautifully. Every corner offers a different backdrop, making it easy to create a gallery with plenty of variety without ever leaving the building.

Whether you're looking for bright and airy, cozy and inviting, or polished and professional, the studio provides a versatile setting that works for countless personal brands.

One of my favorite things about the space is how effortlessly it elevates your images. The neutral color palette and beautiful window light allow the focus to stay where it belongs—on you and your story.

It's easy to see why so many Arizona photographers and creatives choose Letty Lume Studio for branding sessions, content creation, and portraits.

Walking Away With More Than Just Photos

Yes, I walked away with beautiful new branding images.

But I also walked away with something even more valuable.

A renewed understanding of what my own clients experience.

I remembered the nervous excitement.
The vulnerability.
The awkward first few minutes.
And the confidence that slowly builds when you feel seen, encouraged, and guided by someone you trust.

That perspective makes me a better photographer.

It reminds me why creating a comfortable experience matters just as much as creating beautiful images.

A Reminder to My Fellow Business Owners

If you've been putting off updating your branding photos because you're waiting to lose ten pounds, get the perfect haircut, find the perfect outfit, or simply because being photographed feels uncomfortable...

You're not alone.

I get it.

I truly do.

But your audience doesn't need perfection.

They need authenticity.

They want to see the real person behind the business they may choose to hire.

As business owners, we ask our clients to trust us every day.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is practice what we preach—and step in front of the camera ourselves.

Because your story deserves to be seen, too.

So, when you tell me you’re nervous I will understand because I have placed myself in your shoes. But I don’t regret it and neither will you. Your business will thank you for it tenfold!
